Problem Regarding a Property

To report a complaint regarding blight, physical property damage, unsanitary conditions, etc. about a property, please do so with Oakland Code Enforcement (you can also report Code Enforcement anonymously on the Oak311 App). 

Some properties in the area, whether a single family or a multi-unit, can sometimes have excessive and repetitive nuisances, crime, or other hazardous issues such as:

• Excess weeds/blight/landscape management.
• Excess noise.
• Loitering and excess gatherings on the street front.
• Blocking streets with vehicles (lack of parking).
• Insufficient garbage services and excess litter (can attract pests, rodents, public causing health hazards).
• Public alcohol consumption.
• Physical and gun violence. 

Please reach out to the property owner regarding the concerns before submitting any official complaints.

Here are the steps you can take to deter future public nuisances and crime:

1. Contact non-emergency/emergency depending on the incident and ask for an incident number. Document the incident for your records. Evidence is key.
2. Ask the Community Resource Officer for an incident report on the property.
3. Write a letter to the property landlord by certified mail or email (or both) regarding repeated nuisances. Offer the property owner/manager 30 days to respond.
4. If the owner has not responded within 30 days or has not addressed the issues in a timely manner, file a public nuisance claim to the City Administrator Greg Minor (510) 238-6370 gminor@oaklandca.gov. This method should be a last resort after all other options have been exhausted.
